    Welcome Back Message

    2016-2017 School Year

    Dear Parents and Community Members,

It is my pleasure to welcome you back to the Jasper County Charter System! If you are new to the community, I do hope you find your experiences with the school district to be both rewarding and positive.

Jasper County Schools has recently completed the transition to Charter System Status. Under OUR new Charter, the District is focused on three main goals: Improving Student Attendance, Increasing Student Proficiency in Literacy, and Increasing Student Proficiency in Mathematics. OUR Charter System expects to meet these goals by maximizing the use of flexibility from state rules while providing superior and innovative learning experiences for OUR students!

The signature focus of the Charter also includes an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). It is OUR belief that STEAM educational experiences will greatly enhance the quality and engagement of student learning!

School-level governance is an important component of the new Charter System. We encourage you to attend and give your feedback to the newly formed School Governance Teams (SGTs) that are comprised of parents, community members, teachers, the principal, and students (6-12). Each SGT will meet on a monthly basis beginning in late August 2016. SGTs are charged with making many important school-level decisions that directly impact OUR children.

Communication is important to us! Thus we were delighted to learn that the Jasper County Charter System was recently ranked 9th in the nation amongst small school districts in the use of technology in the areas of digital governance and communication. You can learn more about OUR school district by visiting this district website or the Facebook link.

Last year, OUR students had many outstanding accomplishments. Athletic, CTAE, Literary teams as well as individual students excelled and advanced to numerous regional, state, and national competitions. Improvements are also happening in OUR classrooms. Teachers and support staff are working harder than ever to improve the quality and rigor of the educational experiences.

There have been a few changes in district and school-level leadership: Dr. Kristina Brooks, Executive Director of Student Services; Mrs. Cheryl Marrett, Interim JCMS Principal; and Mrs. Dionka Davis-Jackson, Interim JCMS Assistant Principal.

The Jasper County Charter System is also in the second year of its implementation of the CARE Grant. Grant funds have been used to significantly improve the counseling and family support services for OUR students and families.

And now, let me share a few important dates with you.

The school year for students will begin on Friday, August 5. Open House will be held at all schools on Wednesday, August 3: Pre-K, JCPS and WPES (4pm-6pm) and JCMS and JCHS (5pm-7pm). The later times for Open House were based on your feedback (Please refer to the district webpage for more information).

Once again, it is my privilege and pleasure to serve you, OUR children and community as Jasper County’s Superintendent of Schools.
Best wishes for the 2017 school year and GO CANES!

    Sincerely,
    Mike Newton, Ed.D.
    Superintendent
