Welcome Back Message
2018-2019 School Year
Dear Parents and Community Members,
It is my pleasure to welcome you back to the Jasper County Charter System! If you are new to the community, I do hope you find your experiences with the school district to be both rewarding and positive
We have recently completed OUR second year as Charter System. Under the Charter, the District has remained focused on three main areas: Improving Student Attendance, Increasing Student Proficiency in Literacy, and Increasing Student Proficiency in Mathematics. OUR Charter System expects improvement in these areas by maximizing the use of flexibility from state rules while providing superior and innovative learning experiences for OUR students!
The signature focus of the Charter has also included an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). It is OUR belief that STEAM educational experiences will greatly enhance the quality and engagement of student learning!
School-level governance is an important component of The Jasper County Charter System. We encourage you to attend and give your feedback to the School Governance Teams (SGTs) that are comprised of parents, community members, teachers, the principal, and students (6-12). Each SGT meets on a monthly basis and are charged with advising the principal and the Board on school-level decisions that directly impact OUR children.
Communication is important to us! You can learn more about OUR school district by visiting this district website or OUR Facebook link. The Monticello News also serves as an important means of communicating the great happenings within the district!
Last year, OUR students had many outstanding accomplishments. Athletic, CTAE, Literary teams as well as individual students excelled and advanced to numerous regional, state, and national competitions.
Improvements are also happening in OUR classrooms. Teachers and support staff are working harder than ever to improve the quality and rigor of the educational experiences as evidenced by Spring 2018 MAP and 2018 Georgia Milestones scores.
On May 22, 2018, the voters of Jasper County approved the ELOST referendum which will allow the Board to continue its facilities renovations/modifications at Jasper County Primary School and Washington Park along with the construction of a new Athletic Complex at JCHS!
The new JCHS Athletic Complex will include a new football/soccer stadium, a track, baseball/softball fields, tennis courts, and numerous concession and fieldhouses. Plans also call for additional parking areas, a home “plaza” area, and a revival of the famous “Hurricane Hut.” We are most excited that the addition of the JCHS Athletic Complex will allow us to host numerous region and fundraising events (e.g. band competitions, track meets, seven-on-seven events) that we were unable to do in the past. The new Athletic Complex will be ready by the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Rose Bowl Field will then become the exclusive home of JCMS!
And you will notice some significant changes to the interior at JCMS as recent renovations have recently been completed. Improvements include: Security enhancements, new roofing for all buildings, interior painting in all classrooms and hallways, new ceiling tiles, floor improvements, new HVAC equipment, and extensive renovations to Wilburn-Davis Gymnasium- and yes, the gym now has air conditioning!
And now, let me share a few important dates with you.
The school year for students will begin on Friday, August 10. Open House will be held at all schools on Wednesday, August 8: Pre-K, JCPS and WPES (4pm-6pm) and JCMS and JCHS (5pm-7pm). The later times for Open House were based on your feedback (Please refer to the district webpage for more information).
As always, it is MY privilege and pleasure to serve you, OUR children and community as Superintendent of Schools.
Best wishes for the 2018-2019 school year and GO CANES!
Mike Newton, Ed.D.
