Dual Enrollment FAQs

Dual Enrollment Defined:

• The purpose of the Dual Enrollment program is to promote and increase access to postsecondary educational opportunities for Georgia high school students. Students take college coursework while still enrolled in high school and those credits go on both a college transcript and a high school transcript.
   

In Georgia, we have two Dual Enrollment programs available:

• Traditional Dual Enrollment this program is designed for the student who is planning to attend a four-year college after high school and will graduate by meeting all the typical high school graduation requirements in Georgia.
• Accelerated Career Diploma this program is designed for the student who is planning to attend a technical college or go straight into the workforce after graduating. These students take fewer high school courses but also earn credentials at a technical college to meet graduation requirements.

All Georgia High School students are eligible for Dual Enrollment if they meet the following criteria:

• Student is in 10th grade or higher*
• Student attends a participating high school (public and private schools may participate). Homeschool students are also eligible.
• Student is admitted to a participating post-secondary institution.

• Step 1- attend a parent night or information session at your student's high school (typically high schools offer these in late fall and January). They will share your school's processes and timelines there.
• Step 2- Create a GaFutures account (if you do not already have one).
• Step 3-  Set up an appointment with your high school counselor or Dual Enrollment coordinator.
• Step 4-  Apply to the college where you want to enroll as a Dual Enrollment student. Step 5  Complete the Dual Enrollment Funding application on GaFutures.org.
• Step 6-  Parents need to complete their portion of the Funding Application.
• Step 7-  Your high school counselor will meet with you to discuss what courses you will take through Dual Enrollment.
• Step 8-  Meet with your assigned Dual Enrollment College Advisory and possibly attend a student orientation session at the college.
• Step 9-  Once you have identified and registered for your college courses, you may meet again with your high school counselor to ensure that those courses are appropriate and will forward your progress toward high school graduation. High school graduation is the most important thing to accomplish.

• Academic courses (English, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Science and World Language)
• CTAE courses (e.g., Healthcare, Automotives, Welding, HVAC, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, etc.)

• 30 Semester Hours
• 45 Quarter Hours

Students participating in the Accelerated Career Diploma Program will use funds through the ACE Grant program, which may provide additional hours of funding based on the program of study/credential that the student is pursuing.

Students may also access HOPE Grant funds to pay for Dual Enrollment CTAE courses. If they use HOPE Grant monies in high school, those hours are subtracted from the total HOPE allotment that students may receive over their lifetime.

• All 26 colleges in the University System of Georgia
• All 22 colleges in the Technical College System of Georgia
• Most of the Independent colleges in Georgia
• High schools offering on-campus TCSG/USGDE courses (Student acceptance to the TCSG/USG institution still required).
• Dual Enrollment funding is NOT available for out of state colleges, technical colleges or other post-secondary institutions
