    Welcome Back Message

    2017-2018 School Year

    Dear Parents and Community Members,

It is my pleasure to welcome you back to the Jasper County Charter System! If you are new to the community, I do hope you find your experiences with the school district to be both rewarding and positive.

We have recently completed OUR first year as Charter System. Under the Charter, the District remains focused on three main areas: Improving Student Attendance, Increasing Student Proficiency in Literacy, and Increasing Student Proficiency in Mathematics. OUR Charter System expects to improve in these areas by maximizing the use of flexibility from state rules while providing superior and innovative learning experiences for OUR students!

The signature focus of the Charter has also included an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). It is OUR belief that STEAM educational experiences will greatly enhance the quality and engagement of student learning.

School-level governance is an important component of the Jasper County Charter System. The School Governance Teams (SGT) are comprised of parents, community members, teachers, the principal, and students (6-12) and are charged with advising the principal and the Board on school-level decisions that directly impact OUR children. The SGTs meet monthly so we encourage you to attend and give your feedback.

Communication is important to us! Thus, we were delighted to learn that the Jasper County Charter System was recently ranked 9th in the nation amongst small school districts in the use of technology in the areas of digital governance and communication. You can learn more about OUR school district by exploring the website or visiting the district Facebook page.

Last year, OUR students had many outstanding accomplishments. Athletic, CTAE, Literary teams as well as individual students excelled and advanced to numerous regional, state, and national competitions.

Improvements are also happening in OUR classrooms. Teachers and support staff are working harder than ever to improve the quality and rigor of the educational experiences as evidenced by Spring 2017 MAP and Georgia Milestones scores.

There have been a few changes in district and school-level leadership: Mr. Ty Snyder, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning; Mr. Charles “Buddy” Cain, JCHS Principal; and Dr. Susan Stone, new WPES Principal.

The Jasper County Charter System is also in the third year of its implementation of the CARE Grant. Grant funds have been used to significantly improve the counseling and family support services for OUR students and families.

And now, let me share a few important dates with you.

The school year for students will begin on Friday, August 11.  Open House will be held at all schools on Wednesday, August 9: Pre-K, JCPS and WPES (4pm-6pm) and JCMS and JCHS (5pm-7pm). The later times for Open House were based on your feedback (Please refer to the district webpage for more information).

Once again, it is my privilege and pleasure to serve you, OUR children and community as Superintendent of Schools.

Best wishes for the 2018 school year and GO CANES!

    Mike Newton, Ed.D.
